In the Next Room (or the vibrator play)
September 13 - October 6, 2024
ABOUT THE SHOW
A comedy about marriage, intimacy, and electricity!
The lesser-known history of the vibrator concerns Victorian doctors using them to treat women for hysteria. However, there’s much more to ‘the vibrator play’ than orgasms and speculums. It's a contemporary reflection on women's sexual expression (and repression), diving into universal themes of motherhood, marriage, and jealousy – all of which playwright Sarah Ruhl masterfully navigates with a balance of drama and humor.

In the Next Room (or the vibrator play) premiered at Berkeley Rep and subsequently marked playwright Sarah Ruhl's 2009 Broadway debut. The play went on to become a 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist in Drama and a three-time Tony Award winner, including Best Play.

The New York Times hailed ‘the vibrator play’ as “a sex comedy designed not for sniggering teenage boys — or grown men who wish they were still sniggering teenage boys — but for adults with open hearts and minds.”
